Are condoms enough?

plannedparenthood:

Someone asked us:

Do you think that a condom is safe enough to prevent pregnancies on a regular basis when used alone? Or do you think that other methods should always be used along with a condom?

When you’re using condoms correctly, they’re effective at preventing pregnancy and offer protection against STDs. But hormonal methods of contraception (like the pill, ring or IUD) are the most effective at preventing pregnancy. This is why it’s such a good idea to use both a hormonal method of contraception and a condom together.  This will be the best way for you to reduce your risk of pregnancy and STDs at the same time. So while condoms are a great thing to use for safer sex, they’re most effective when used along with something else.
