On feminism: being “nice”

nothing2c:

“The truth is, women are still required to be “nice”. To be unthreatening. You can show me all the token examples of assertive modern women, but the fact still remains that more often than not, I hear women deflecting their seriousness, their cleverness, their interrogative spirit, via a systematic persona of infantilising niceness…”

You don’t owe prettiness to anyone. Not to your boyfriend/spouse/partner, not to your co-workers, especially not to random men on the street. You don’t owe it to your mother, you don’t owe it to your children, you don’t owe it to civilization in general. Prettiness is not a rent you pay for occupying a space marked ‘female.’

This guy was awesome, he even wore a mini-skirt. Rape prevention tip: use the buddy system! If you’re not able to stop yourself from sexually assaulting people, ask a friend to stay with you while you’re in public!

What the fuck is this, JCPenney!

Also, while we’re all sufficiently disgusted with JCPenney, go and sign this petition for the workers burned alive making their clothes.

As a huge apparel company in this country, selling shirts that say “Eat Less” is probably not a good idea. After backlash in the blogosphere over Urban’s “Eat Less” shirt, it has been pulled from the company’s online store. However, you can still find it in physical stores. And if you want a shirt that says “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels” — which was Kate Moss’s motto until people got upset she said so in WWD and had to take it back — some people aren’t afraid to sell that, anyway.
